My photos from the now-closed Colorado Corrections Alternative Programs prison boot camp are featured on Pete Brook’s Prison Photography blog. I appreciate the photo feature, and Pete has collected updated numbers from the DoC and some additional articles on the closure. As he points out, the data calls into question just how effective the program was. I find myself wondering if spending on counseling and treatment over a longer period of time will eventually prove more effective than spending in short bursts on intense periods of time in programs like CCAP.
Regardless of the overall success of the program, I worry that cuts such as these are shortsighted. We can’t help rehabilitate our prisoners unless we make an investment, including a financial one, in them.
