I just finished photographing the National Western Stock Show here in Denver. The stock show is a look into the culture and communities behind agriculture today. Ranch people mix with rodeo people. Livestock and trucks and cowboy hats surround you. Everyone eats hamburgers. Here are some favorite images, with more at my archive. Thanks for [...]

As noted earlier, I’m shifting my home base to Denver. Moving is a pain, and takes a lot of time! I’ve posted a few photos of the boxes, organization, apartment emptiness, and things from the road. Share

My ongoing project on mining in Bolivia is featured today on the CNN.com photo blog. Check it out at this link: http://cnnphotos.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/31/the-resource-curse-of-mining-in-bolivia/ Share

Exciting news: my business is expanding to Denver! I will still continue to work as an event photographer in Seattle, and I’ll do some Seattle editorial photography too. But as of late fall, home base will be Colorado. Wondering where I’ll be at a specific time? Give me a call at 206-905-4555 or send me [...]

Last weekend I traveled, as always, to photograph the Carleton College Reunion in Minnesota. Heavy rains caused the campus to flood on the first evening, resulting in some high water levels around campus. The water got pretty high before receding just in time for Reunion. Here are a few photos of the flooding. Share

I was thrilled to get the call to photograph the Windermere Cup again this year. Windermere has sponsored the race since its inception for more than 20 years. UW, a rowing powerhouse, dominated both the women’s and men’s races and capped a day of perfect weather. Share

An image of mine will be included in the Foto8 Summershow in London this summer. Boom! (Not this one, I just like it.) I’m working with Panda Lab, a photo printer in Seattle, to produce a sweet giclée print for them. Here’s the link to the show’s winners; check it out if you’re in London, [...]

From a week in May spent working with Rebecca Norris Webb and Alex Webb. This was a dream. I did a tiny street photography essay on the communities of Williamsburg and Greenpoint in Brooklyn; here were a few frames I liked. (The Webbs have another workshop coming up in Colorado in fall 2012, if you’re interested. Check [...]

News! I am one of the photographers selected for the prestigious Review Santa Fe portfolio review this coming June. It’s an honor and I’m really looking forward to the chance to work with some great editors. Share

I’m back in Seattle after a working trip to Bolivia. Big web site update – see some of the editorial images from my essay on mining and water pollution, along with updates in lots of other places. Check it out at www.theostroomer.com . Share

One of my favorite parts of the job is to work with nonprofits and other organizations to create emotional imagery of their events and fundraisers. I like mixing my candid journalistic style with the emotion (usually happiness!) that comes out at this type of event. These photos can be great for marketing, too! Share

Miners waiting for the elevator underground in the San José mine in Oruro, Bolivia. From my ongoing documentary project. Share

Darth Vader rubs his belly during a photo opportunity at Carnival in Oruro. Buy it at this link. Share

Carnival in Bolivia is one of the largest in South America. There are thousands of performers and it seems like the entire country packs into Oruro to check it out for the weekend. Carnival reflects many Bolivian traditions including the Morenada, Diablada, and Caporales dances, along with marching bands that always seem to have one [...]

Photographed when I was starting my formal-ish education with Denver photographer Kevin Moloney. I remember this as the first photograph that I took that I really truly fell in love with. From the University of Colorado’s drag ball. Tri-X. (In case you’re wondering, I still shoot plenty of film, both for street photography and weddings). [...]

Wayne, Delilah, and their dog Coco lived at the Circle Motel in Lafayette, Colorado. The motel was at the center of a debate over whether to close it for preservation purposes or raze the property for redevelopment. Aside from an occasional visitor, the couple rarely left their tiny, one-room apartment. They lived at the Circle [...]

My photos don’t always fit into a place where I can publish them. That cocky photographer Justin Mott calls them orphans, a term that I like. Here are a few spotted as I reviewed my work from 2011, along with a few recent pictures from Denver. Share

Over the summer I was the commercial photographer for the launch of the new Swedish Medical Center campus in Issaquah, a community east of Seattle. The assignment was to photograph real, active people in the communities that the hospital would be serving. I worked with Gigantic Planet and they did an awesome job on the [...]

From some recent work on the new generation of farmers in Washington. The photographs (from top to bottom) are Michal Garapich and Jimbo McGreevy. Both are from the Cloudview EcoFarm near Royal City in central Washington. Share

Alki Beach is the longest beach in Seattle and one of my favorite spots in all of the city. It’s filled with tourists, hot cars, overpriced food, and people on spread all over the sand. You can bike it, blade it, walk it, bring your tiny dog or ride on your scooter. I love it [...]

Street photography has always been a passion of mine and a reason to continue exploring and rediscovering the city of Seattle. My summer has been really busy, but here are a few from recent wanderings. Enjoy! Share

The University of Washington needed photos of their annual Undergraduate Research Symposium earlier this month. It was incredible to see so many young people passionately presenting their research while I photographed, and the day marked an attendance record for UW with over 900 presenters. Seattle photographer David Ryder connected me with UW – thanks so [...]

A monthly column highlighting my favorite visual links from around the web, including… Laura El-Tantawy’s recent work in Egypt. Truly inspiring. Excellent post by Florida photographer Chip Litherland – who also studied at the University of Colorado – on the right reasons to photograph. Read it on Scott Kelby’s blog here. Colorado photographer Matt Nager‘s [...]
